Stunning and Rare Antique Victorian (1800s) or Possibly Early Edwardian (Early 1900s) 10k Yellow/Rose Gold and Australian Black Opal Ring with Beautiful and Bright Blue and Green Flash

This is a truly remarkable piece of the past. The five Opal stones have a flash and iridescence that is extraordinary and incredibly rare to find to have survived in a ring of this age. The colors are mostly a bright bright blue and vibrant green. The stone setting is open backed and the inside of the ring is soft and very comfortable on the hand. The ring is also substantial and has a nice thick band not overworn from its age. One opal is chipped but is not noticeable without inspection. You can see it in the pictures.

The discovery of Black Opal in Australia in the late 1800’s with its bright colors changed the gemstone world. This new Black Opal became to be known as the ‘Queen of Gems’. It is now becoming more scarce and harder to find, and therefore more valuable each year.

I have never in person seen this kind of blue and green flash. The stones glow wherever they are. I can't really describe how they look in person. It's truly a magical 120-year-old ring. It would also be an awesome stacking ring.

Any vintage and antiques lover would be beside themselves to own this. Opals are not as resilient as other gem stones and can become cracked from the wrong conditions - so someone took good care of this ring for the last 120-130 years in order to bring this piece of the past to its next custodian. It is a treasure.

I believe it to be Victorian and others have concurred. Unfortunately the hallmarks have been worn down. You can see them in the pictures above. There is a possibility that the ring is Edwardian and from the early 1900s. The ring is from Europe according to its previous owner whose mother acquired it.

The magical history of the opal from the GIA:
"Writers have compared opals to volcanoes, galaxies, and fireworks. In ancient Rome, this gem symbolized love and hope.
Many cultures have credited opal with supernatural origins and powers. Arabic legends say it falls from the heavens in flashes of lightning. The ancient Greeks believed opals gave their owners the gift of prophecy and guarded them from disease. Europeans have long considered the gem a symbol of hope, purity, and truth."

In the early 1800s the stone fell out of favor with many because it was seen as cursed (which we believe makes the stone even more special) but at the end of the century made its way back to its previous place of honor.

Find out what powers an opal may bestow on you...

Perfect as a gift for someone with an October birthday or anniversary as it is the birthstone for October.
